Software Defined Radio (SDR) (September 2018)
The column is an introduction, review and experience with software defined radio.
An SDR is a radio system where the traditional hardware components such as the
demodulators, mixers, filters and amplifiers, just to name a few, are
implemented in software running on a personal computer. The software is then
interfaced with an external "RF front-end" which contains the antenna
connection, band-pass filters and an analog-to-digital converter.

Automatic dependent surveillance - broadcast (ADS-B) is a technology in which an aircraft periodically broadcasts its position determined by using GPS navigation techniques thus enabling it to be tracked.

The column explores various transmission lines and factors affecting performance.
Transmission lines, aka feed lines, come in many various forms such as open wire, parallel lines (ladder line), coaxial cable, waveguide or microstrip just to name a few. They all have one thing in common; to connect the receiver-transmitter to the antenna system.
